Fabrication Project OneIn order to make my tic tac toe board, I had to first use a tape measure to measure out my block of wood. I then used a miter saw to cut it down to size. After that, I used a hand saw to make the border lines more apparent. After that, I used a drill press to make the holes for the marbles to rest on and the storage compartment. I then sanded my piece to make it smooth. I used two coats of stain and one coat of clear coat to finish my design. As a finale, I used a hammer to hammer the door in with a nail. ...

Fabrication project oneWe started by grabbing a piece of wood and drawing lines with a tape measure, then cutting them with a saw. Then, we made an X in each square and used a machine to open some holes in the middle of each X. Then, we sanded and made some holes in the part next to our project. After opening the holes, we sanded it with a sanding machine. Then, we applied some kind of glossy paint and let it dry. The next day, we applied another coat of a different liquid. Then, we sanded it with sandpaper and applied a glossy paste. Then, we grabbed a piece of wood to make the lid to store the balls. To put the lid on, we nailed a nail with the piece of wood, and our project was ready....

The tic tac toe projectI created this project by using a block of wood given to me by the teacher. I then measured where the holes of such marble balls will be stored. I then sawed lines into the side of my piece. I used a drill press to drill 2 holes in the same side I measured. For the vice drill press I made nine little spots for the marbles to be held on the large top. I then used a palm sander to sand the rigid spaces on my piece. I stained my piece for the brownish color it has. I used a clear coat for the shiny color and I waxed it for the same result. Lastly, I hammered the nail to my piece to make a compartment door....

Tic-Tac-Toe ProjectFirst we started with the square and a tape measurer to mark out on a piece of wood so we can cut it with the miter saw. Then we cut lines into the piece of wood to make the tic-tac-toe board shape. We then mark down dots where we will drill down using the drill press and the drill press vice. After that we sand it down using a palm sander. After it has been sanded we drill two big holes into the wood block which will hold the marbles once we are done. We then stained the wood and after a day of drying we put on one layer of clear coat. Once that layer dries we put on another layer of the clear coat. After it dries we then hammer the door down using a nail and get the marbles....

Family CommunicationOur primary family communication tool at Hoover is SeeSaw. I use seesaw for frequent connection to families. I send announcements to my class and all of first grade to share exciting upcoming events or news. I message families frequently to share updates or pictures of their own kids. I also share photos, flyers, and weekly updates on seesaw for families to see. I take pictures of fun activities, assemblies, recess, reading groups, etc. Weekly updates include information about what we are doing in our classroom, how parents can support learning at home, upcoming events for the school/PTA, and important reminders. I do my best to do phone calls to families I do not see at pickup to chat about how kids are doing. I am working finding more opportunities for inviting families into the classroom, including inviting them to volunteer or share about careers. I invite families of award recipients to our monthly assemblies. Students also post work on seesaw that families can see and comment on. Each student has an orange FISH folder (family involvement starts here). This folder is where completed work/flyers/phonics books/other paper information is sent home....

Waggle and Reflex EncouragementIn an effort to get students more engaged in district approved math resources, I have started having them track their progress on waggle and reflex. They recieve awards are they earn points and track their waggle path with the attached chart. Students have accelerated their progress since I started this, and students who had minimal points the first time I handed out rewards have started earning much more points. Students get excited to receive the awards, and they love taking them home to show their families. reflex awards...

Routines and ProceduresI have clear expected routines and procedures for students in my classroom. I have visuals for students that I project for all the different parts of our day. These routines and procedures limit unexpected behaviors and help students independently complete transitions and work. Having these in place allows me to spend less time reminding students or telling them what they need to do, and more time helping students with academic work or in small groups. I created this music video for first grade. This video is used to transition into whole group learning for reading, writing, and social studies/science. Students know the expectation is to be showing expected choices for whole group learning by the time the song is over. Students earn time towards an extra recess when they are ready before the song ends. The "extra recess" bank is used on Fridays. https://youtu.be/VPRFkgK_p7w...

Tic Tac Toe BoardTo create this tic tac toe board, we first took a piece of wood and used a tape measure to mark the measurements to make a 3 by 3 inch square. After measuring, we used the miter saw to cut the wood into a square. Then we used a ruler to draw lines across the top face of our block, then we clamped our block to the table to make four slightly indented lines, which made nine even squares to form the board. After that, we made x’s in each one of the nine squares to find the center of each square. We used the drill press to make circular dents in the middle of each square. Then we used the drill press vice to drill two deep holes in one of the sides of the block. After we were done with all the drilling, we used a palm sander to make our block and side cover to smooth and soften any sharp edges. We painted our block and side cover with two coats of stain in between classes to fully dry. After drying, we painted it with one coat of clear coat. Then we put wax on the whole thing. We finally used a hammer to push in a nail to secure the cover on the side of the two deep holes filled with marbles....

My tic-tac-toe making experience/ reviewCut a piece of wood with a miter saw so the piece is a square that is 3 and ¾ inches. Then you get the miter box and saw 6 lines, 3 horizontally and 1 ¼ inches apart, then you do the same For the 3 vertical 1 ¼ inches apart. Then measure 1 ¾ inches from the sides of the tic tac toe board and make a mark. Next, you line the piece up with the mark then clamp it. So the piece is stable so you can use the drill press to make the storage compartments. Then you sand the pieces with the palm sander to make the pieces smooth. Next you stain the piece and storage department cover. After that you stain then next day you apply the clear coat then wait the next day to apply the second layer of clear coat. Then sand the extra clear coat with a piece of sandpaper. Then wax the piece with the steel wool. Lastly nail the storage department cover on, and fill the storage department with marbles....

Tic-Tac-Toe Board ProjectTo start I measured the lines to make the tic-tac-toe board the correct size then after I got the correct measurements I got the lines for the boxes on the tic-tac-toe board. After I did that I used the Miter Saw to cut the piece down to the right size. After that I used the Miter Box/Clamp to make indents where the lines indicating the boxes were. Continuing the process I used the Drill Press to make the indents where the marbles would go when playing. After that I used the Drill Press Vice to make the storage system in the tic-tac-toe board. After getting all of the incisions and indents I used the Palm Sander to smooth everything out and make it feel nicer. Following the Palm Sander I used Clear Coat and Stain to make it have a glossier look along with making it have a darker hue. Following that I used the Wax and Sandpaper to smooth down the piece, remove the drip marks, and make it nice and glossy. Then to wrap it up I took a hammer and after lining up where the nail would go I hammered the door onto the Tic-tac-toe board finishing the project. ...

Fabrication Project 1: Tic Tac Toe BoardThe process of making the board is a long one. First, we use a tape measure and a pencil on a long piece of wood to measure out a 3.75-inch square on it. Then, we cut along the pencil line using the miter saw, giving us a square. Then, we measure and draw 1.25-inch lines on the board in both directions, dividing the square into 9 divisions. Using the miter box handheld saw, we cut a small dip into the wood along the lines, trying to make them as even as possible. Next, using a specific drill press with a stopper, we cut small dips into the center of each of the 9 divisions in the wood (of course, marking it with pencil first)....

Fabrication Project 1The first step we did was grab a piece of wood shaped like a rectangle. After that we used a tape measure to divide the piece into multiple pieces. We then had to cut the piece of wood into multiple square pieces using the Miter Saw. Next, we had to use the Miter Box/ clamp. Then we had to use the drill press and the drill press vice to carve out the holes for the marbles and small dents to place the marbles in when playing tic-tac-toe. After we did that we had to use the palm sander to sand down our project and get it smooth and soft. We then stained the piece of wood. Lastly, we had to use a clear coat, wax our project, and then use the hammer to connect the smaller piece of wood with the bigger piece of wood. ...

Early Literacy Professional DevelopmentThis school year we have been leading district professional development around early literacy with our school's "pod" that has focused on incorporating Science of Reading practices into literacy instruction. During our session in February we began to help teachers put the theories and strategies we have discussed more into practice. We accomplished this through modeling two phonics lessons. I helped facilitate the lesson for teaching the digraphs ch and tch. Within this lesson we led teachers through instructional routines as if they were students so that they could get a sense of what it felt like from a student perspective to complete the lesson. Establishing these routines is a way to lead effective small groups, which creates a productive learning environment. We led teachers through the routines below:...

Vocabulary InstructionThis year we have continued our LETRS professional development journey and have started to complete LETRS Volume 2, which focuses more on vocabulary and comprehension. This falls within the Language Comprehension strands of Scarborough's Reading Rope (2001). These strands have come up as areas of need for some of our students, so this will allow us to guide teachers as they work to address the Language Comprehension strands within their whole group and small group instruction. In order to expand my knowledge of this, I am working to incorporate strategies for teaching vocabulary within one of my intensive interventions with a student who has difficulties in this area. I have incorporated the LETRS Instructional Routine to Introduce a New Word to help with this. Within this routine, you first discuss the syllables, morphemes, part of speech and other characteristics of the word. Then you develop a student-friendly definition to use with students. In order to move beyond this and help students understand more about the word's meaning and usage, you then use it in different examples, ask students questions about the word's meaning before having students use the word by sharing examples of it or using the word in a sentence....
